Summer course on

Materials for the Hydrogen Society

August 17.-21. in 2010

This summer course focused on various issues related to the establishment of a hydrogen based society where hydrogen is used as the energy carrier. The need for new and improved materials in order to solve various technical problems will in particular be emphasized. The tasks of producing hydrogen and storing it will be covered with emphasis on the description of fundamental, atomic scale processes. The lecturers are scientists working on various aspects of these problems.

The course spanned five days, from Tuesday August 17. to Saturday August 21, and was held at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik, Iceland in a building called 'VR-II' (the street address is Hjardarhagi 2-6). It started at 9:00 on Tuesday morning, August 17 and ended at 16:00 on Saturday August 21.

Wednesday afternoon excursion included a visit to a hydrogen electrolysis and filling station, as well as to a geothermal power plant and Blue Lagoon.

Friday afternoon excursion included a visit to the geothermal area of Hveragerdi, an old farm house at Keldur, the Saga museum at Hvolsvollur and a hike up towards Eyjafjallajokull (which erupted this spring).

Students received two EC credit units at the University of Iceland for attending this summer course. These should be transferable to most other universities in Europe.
